FAQ
WHY SHOULD I JOIN?
Diversity
You may have already been asked "what do you want to do after pharmacy school? What kind of pharmacist do want to be?"
Like most of us, you may not have an answer to this question yet, but APhA-ASP can help you figure this out. Our organization strives to provide students hands-on exposure to topics within community outreach, health education, leadership, and pharmacy policy. APhA represents all fields of pharmacy because the only way to continue to move our profession forward is to Advance As One.
Leadership
Being a part of APhA-ASP/CPhA at UCSD means that there are leadership opportunities available to you on a national, regional, and chapter level. APhA-ASP/CPhA at Skaggs uniquely offers 7 positions to P1 students...

Patient care
Our health fairs are where we turn classroom knowledge into hands-on experience. Through diabetes, blood pressure, and cholesterol screenings and counseling, we are able to personally interact and connect with patients to make a positive impact on their health.
We also offer health education to better inform the community of OTC medications. Ever wondered when to take Acetaminophen instead of Ibuprofen? Or the difference between your 30 and 50 SPF sunscreen? Our OTC chair supports community outreach to educate on efficient use of the most accessible medications.
Enrichment
Mentor pre-pharmacy students through our mentor-mentee program. Talk to high school students about prescription drug abuse at our Operation Substance Use Disorder events. Educate professional groups about living a healthy and active lifestyle during patient project outreaches. APhA-ASP/CPhA allows you to share messages that you are passionate about through a multitude of different programs.
Fun
From the AC Party (dress as something that starts with 'A' or 'C' and win a prize for best costume!) to our annual Skaggs Got Culture night, there is always something going on to entertain our students, staff, and friends.
HOW MUCH IS IT?
$85 per year.
Dues cover national student membership to APhA-ASP, state membership to CPhA, and local membership to SDCPhA.
WHAT KIND OF EVENTS DO YOU HOLD?
Health screenings are held throughout the academic year through a variety of initiatives offered by our board members. Some of these include the Kobey's Swap Meet Health Fair, Catch the Wave Screenings, and Love Your Heart screening events.
Educational events are offered both on and off campus. Student leaders invite practicing pharmacists and faculty to speak during lunch about hot topics in pharmacy. Students also offer educational sessions in the community for health advocacy
Policy advocacy is a huge part of pharmacy practice, as the pharmacist's role is constantly evolving with the shortage of health professionals. Two delegates attend the Summer Leadership Institute in Washington DC where they advocate for proposed pharmacy law directly with their representatives at Capitol Hill. Our Policy VP also attends and encourages student participation in policy
Social events are led by our Communications VP and Membership VP, which allows students ample opportunity for networking among the P1, P2, and P3 classes
HOW ARE PEOPLE SELECTED FOR YOUR EVENTS?
Our members always have priority in signups for events, though we accept non-member participants for events as well. In order to keep sign ups fair, we use a random number generator to select volunteers.
